WK1 SLJ - Activity 2(D1): Setting Sail

SLJ - Activity 2: Setting Sail

The first settlers to come to New Zealand must have been really brave! They had to leave their original homes and sail thousands of miles across the ocean on a special boat called a ‘waka’ to reach New Zealand.

Imagine that you were on board one of the wakas. On your blog, write a short letter to a friend telling them about your voyage to New Zealand. In the letter be sure to tell them how you feel about moving to a new country. If it was me, I would have felt really nervous…

Dear (friend)

I just arrived at New zealand. The journey here was bad, I kept on getting sea sick.
I wish you were here though, the villagers here are friendly and there are heaps of kids.
It was easy to settle in but I still feel uneasy about my future. Other than that, there are millions of beautiful trees and insects I wish you could see. I miss you a lot but I have to go, I hope you all the best.

  1. Kia ora Davarni,

Good work on this letter! You have done a great job of telling your friend what is happening. It would have been very difficult for the first settlers if they got sea sick! What a long journey for them.

I wonder if you have ever been on a boat before. I have been on boats a few times but never for very long because I get sea sick very quickly!

I look forward to reading more of your blog.

    1. Hi Ruby,

I have been on a sailing boat before but it wasn't very fun. But thank you for your poistive comment, I appericiate your feedback.

    2. Hi Davarni,

Oh dear! Why was it not very fun? It would be awesome to hear more about that experience.

    3. Hi again Ruby,

I felt really sick throughout the whole experience. That's why I didn't enjoy any bit of the journey.
